The Department of Housing's Day Care Center began the 2023-2024 school year, its 44th consecutive year since it began operating in 1979. This center serves children ages 2 to 4 of employees of the Department of Housing, including those in the CDBG-DR Program, and the Public Housing Administration (AVP), an affiliated agency of the Department. The center is affiliated with the Assistant Secretary of Human Resources, whose assistant secretary is Lisneida Nieves.
The center has staff who have served children or grandchildren of employees of the Department of Housing (DV) and its programs, and its affiliated agency, the Public Housing Administration (AVP), for years. This year, the center has 25 students. The staff is composed of: Ms. Mayra Escalera, a teacher's assistant with 35 years of service; Ms. Carmen Negrón, a preschool teacher with 24 years of service; Ms. Nayda Varcarcel, a teacher's assistant; and Ms. Rosa Cordero, also a teacher's assistant.
In addition to the teaching staff, this daycare center also includes Ms. Ederlidis Cordero, the cafeteria manager, and Ms. Wanda Álamo, the cook. All of this staff is supervised by the director of the school, Ms. Laura Dávila, who has been the director for 10 years.
This center is one of the few still operating within government agencies. It is important to note that in addition to offering educational services, it offers lunches and snacks, and throughout the year, the Parents' Association is responsible for activities such as Halloween, Christmas, educational tours, and more.
