As part of preparations for the arrival of Hurricane Season, the Department of Housing's Office of Emergency Management (DV) and its Public Housing Administration (AVP) offered forklift operator training for employees of both agencies. Mr. Víctor Nieto, president of Lift Trucks & Parts, Inc., led the training at the agency's facilities on Barbosa Avenue in Hato Rey. He certified the employees as forklift operators.
According to Mr. Camilo Melendez, Director of the Department of Housing and Public Health (PVH) Emergency Management Office, "By training some of these personnel—some of them drivers from the Department or PVH—we aim to expedite the response in the event of emergencies or disasters. In previous years, we have relied on personnel from our 10 administrative agents or officials from other agencies to load and unload trucks and other vehicles with materials, equipment, and supplies, especially for the shelters we open or for our 12 regional offices. Having our own "Figueros," as they are known, will immediately begin work as required in emergencies or disasters. We therefore appreciate the support of Department of Housing Secretary William Rodríguez and PVH Administrator Alejandro Salgado in providing this type of training to be ready for this new hurricane season or any emergency event that this agency must address as the leader of component number 6 of the Government of Puerto Rico's Emergency Plan."
