San Juan – The Department of Housing and its Public Housing Administration joined the prevention and public alert campaign during this hurricane season with the event known as "Tu Casa Segura" (Your Safe House), organized by architect Astrid Díaz and meteorologist Deborah Martorell. Various public and private entities, along with the Housing Authority, also joined the event, setting up exhibits and offering their services and programs.
The event's opening ceremony, held in the main atrium of Plaza Las Américas in Hato Rey, was attended by the Undersecretary of Housing, Omar Figueroa Vázquez, representing the Secretary of Housing, Ciary Pérez Peña; the administrator of the Public Housing Authority, Juan Rosario Hernández; and various agency heads and private sector personnel.
At the event, both officials emphasized the importance of being prepared for any emergency, be it storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, or any other disaster. “We, the Department of Housing, are tasked with mobilizing citizens in need to shelters in emergencies or disasters. Currently, we have 367 shelters with a capacity of up to 40,000 people,” said Undersecretary Figueroa Vázquez.
For his part, the AVP administrator stated, “Most of our 328 Public Housing communities have received training to cope with an emergency or disaster. We urge everyone to be alert to any situation that may occur, and preventing it is paramount. Don't be misled by rumors in times of emergency. Have a family plan, and if you have to evacuate your home, do so on time and safely, for yourself, your family, and your community.”
