Some 76 families from the regions of Caguas, Carolina, San Juan, and Bayamón now have their property titles, after the Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro R. Pierluisi, and the Secretary of the Department of Housing, William Rodríguez Rodríguez, presented them with the documents today at the agency's headquarters. The documentation was made possible thanks to the Title Authorization Program, subsidized with CDBG-DR funds, and the Department of Housing's title program.
"Delivering these property titles and fulfilling the dreams of many families, some of whom have waited many years for this moment, is one of the most gratifying actions we can take during my administration. Today we are delivering over 65 property titles to Puerto Rican families in 15 municipalities on our island, thus fulfilling one of my highest priorities as governor, which is to continue working so that our people have decent housing and can secure their future and that of their families," said Governor Pierluisi.
The governor emphasized that, during his administration, multiple affordable housing projects have been implemented, increasing incentives and streamlining processes to achieve the construction and repair of as many housing units as possible. In fact, the reconstruction effort includes more than 6,400 renovated or rebuilt homes, assistance to over 4,300 families in their home purchases, and 17 planned projects for over 2,500 housing units using CDBG-DR funds and available federal tax credits.
For his part, Rodríguez Rodríguez stated that "the Department of Housing is responsible for providing a decent home to all Puerto Rican families. With this mission as our guiding principle, we are focused on streamlining the processes that allow families to have a safe roof over their heads."
Among the benefits of holding a formal property title is the accreditation of ownership of the property, which protects it from individuals attempting to seize it. Furthermore, citizens may be subject to offers from banks and other institutions to obtain loans, make improvements, or start a business. Likewise, having a registered title makes it more likely that the property's value will increase.
Finally, Rodríguez Rodríguez noted that "thanks to the Special Law to Accelerate the Processes for Granting Property Titles under the Title Authorization Program of the Department of Housing, signed by Governor Pedro Pierluisi, we now have new tools to continue accelerating the process of granting property titles and thus continue the reconstruction process, while making efficient use of Puerto Rico's recovery funds."
