Governor Jenniffer González Colón, the Secretary of the Department of Housing, Ciary Pérez Peña, and the Mayor of Barceloneta, Wanda Soler Rosario, announced the construction of the Palmeras single-family housing project. This project will be located in the Florida neighborhood outside Barceloneta.
Governor González Colón reported, "This is part of our administration's initiatives to assist hundreds of families seeking housing. We thank the Department of Housing for this strategic effort to increase access to safe, resilient, and affordable housing outside of hazard zones, as part of the recovery and mitigation programs following the natural events that have affected the island in recent years."
For her part, Secretary Pérez Peña stated, "Our agency will be contributing approximately $11.5 million, which comes from our CDBG-MIT mitigation program funds, for the development initiative of this project, which will consist of 38 single-family housing units." Mayor Soler Rosario also stated, "These housing projects give families hope for a safe home. I hope that Barcelona residents who have their vouchers can be the first to benefit from this initiative, which also impacts the development of Barceloneta in all areas. I thank the governor for this effort."
The Palmeras project has already begun construction and is expected to be completed within 24 months. The creation of approximately 264 general jobs is estimated, of which 121 will be direct jobs.
