San Juan – Secretary Rosachely Rivera Santana, along with several officials from Governor Jennifer González Colón's administration, including the Executive Director of the Ports Authority, Mr. Norberto Negrón Díaz, and the Chief of Staff of the Public Housing Administration (AVP), Mr. José Torres, visited the area where, over the weekend of November 15-16, some 14 forty-foot railcars, fully loaded with humanitarian aid collected at five collection centers around the island, departed for Kingston, Jamaica.
Among the items collected, mostly donated by citizens and public and private sector employees, were water, non-perishable food, medical supplies, hygiene products, bedding, and other essential supplies, which are now en route to communities affected by Hurricane Melissa.
The cargo will be received by Food for the Poor, an organization accredited by the Government of Jamaica, for distribution in the hardest-hit areas. This effort was the result of the joint work of the Department of State, the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, the Puerto Rico Shipping Association, agencies, municipalities, volunteers and the shipping sector, at no cost to the Government of Puerto Rico.
