San Juan – The Undersecretary of the Department of Housing, Attorney Omar Figueroa, recently chaired the first multisectoral working meeting to explore the feasibility of developing affordable housing for low- and middle-income individuals.
Attorney Figueroa, along with members of the agency's team and representing the Department Secretary, Ciary Pérez Peña, hosted representatives from various sectors at the headquarters. These included the Executive Director of the Housing Finance Authority, Mr. Ricardo Alvarez, representatives from the Puerto Rico Builders Association, and the Puerto Rico Bankers Association, among others, to discuss how to develop affordable housing units.
According to the official, “We are complying with Law 100 of 2025, which fulfills one of Governor Jenniffer González Colón's wishes: to study, in conjunction with banks, private companies, and municipal governments, how this agency can facilitate the planning and construction of affordable housing units for a sector that desires homeownership. This includes public employees, professionals starting their careers, and individuals who, for whatever reason, have not had that opportunity. With this law, we will study ways to develop projects or housing for this sector.”
The undersecretary reported that this multi-sector group includes, in addition to the entities already mentioned, representatives from the Federation and Association of Mayors. He also announced that meetings will continue soon to discuss ways to develop a standardized model for affordable housing construction across the island.
