Guaynabo – In anticipation of the upcoming 2025 Hurricane Season, which begins this Sunday, June 1st and runs through November 30th, Governor Jennifer González Colón held an important meeting at the headquarters of the Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Administration (BEM), with state agency heads and officials from FEMA, the U.S. National Weather Service in Puerto Rico, and other federal components on the island.
Among other agency heads was Housing Secretary Ciary Pérez Peña, whose agency leads emergency and disaster prevention and recovery efforts, as well as mass mobilization, which is component #6 of the Government of Puerto Rico's emergency plan.
According to the plan, once activated, mayors will request, through the BEM, the Department of Education, to open the schools used for shelters, and the Department of Housing, along with its staff and administrative agents, to manage them. There are currently 367 certified shelters across the island. This includes schools, community centers in public housing projects run by the Public Housing Administration (AVP), among others.
Secretary Pérez Peña stated, “Our focus and that of the Government is to anticipate, coordinate, and act responsibly before, during, and after a storm, hurricane, or disaster. Each agency has a vital role to play, and we are ready and aligned to protect life and property and ensure the most effective and rapid response possible to any emergency or disaster.”
