(San Juan, Puerto Rico - November 21, 2025) - As a prelude to Thanksgiving, the Department of Housing, together with the Governor of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer González Colón, held the "Celebrating in Community" event to provide food, services, and joy to vulnerable populations such as the homeless and senior citizens.
"Today we opened the doors of our agency to welcome hundreds of people who enjoyed a celebration full of music, joy, and kindness. Participants received information about government services, food, personal hygiene items, health services, a barber shop, and entertainment. Without a doubt, seeing the gratitude and smiles on their faces motivates us to continue working for our people," said the Secretary of the Department of Housing, Ciary Pérez Peña.
The activity arose as part of the initiatives undertaken by the Housing Subsidy and Community Development Secretariat, which administers the “Rental Assistance Program Continuum of Care PR-502” in partnership with all divisions of the Department of Housing and the Public Housing Administration.
“This type of activity brings us closer to the people, allowing us to learn firsthand about their needs. That’s why it’s important for us to work on initiatives where we can directly discuss citizens’ concerns and needs so we can guide them and offer them a helping hand,” emphasized Juan A. Rosario Hernández, administrator of Public Housing.
The participants, mostly from the metropolitan area of Puerto Rico, received guidance on the services offered by the Department of Housing and the Public Housing Administration, as well as other agencies of the Government of Puerto Rico, non-governmental entities, and non-profit organizations. Services offered included HIV testing, legal guidance, identification cards, vaccinations, high school exam preparation, health plans, and shelter information.
Governor Jenniffer González Colón participated in the event and emphasized the importance of events like this.
"When different sectors unite with the goal of serving the people, extraordinary things happen. Today, we were able to enjoy an event full of joy, celebration, and solidarity with hundreds of people. In addition to providing services, food, and guidance, participants left happy, knowing that their needs are a priority for our administration and that they have friendly hands available to support them," the Governor stated.
Finally, officials thanked the organizations and agencies that participated in this project:
Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Department of Health, Department of the Family, Department of Recreation and Sports, Department of Transportation and Public Works, Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, State Elections Commission, Mental Health and Addiction Services Administration, Department of Education, Fire Department, Agricultural Business Development Administration, Family Socioeconomic Development Administration, Health Insurance Administration, Medicaid Program, Solo por Hoy, La Perla de Gran Precio, Community Initiative, La Fondita de Jesús, Bill's Kitchen, Puerto Rico CONCRA, Coalition of Coalitions, J2B, One Stop Career, Coordinadora Moriviví, Legal Assistance Clinic, Pro Bono, Inc., and Hogar Ruth.
